AWS Infrastructure Optimization Assessment: Frequently Asked Questions

An AWS Optimization and Licensing Assessment (OLA) is a great way to get an AWS-funded assessment of your existing infrastructure. In the course of the numerous OLAs we have conducted in recent years, we have encountered similar questions time and again. In this blog post, we try to answer the most common ones.

How does an OLA work?

Many of our customers are interested in an OLA and want to know more about it. They wonder how long it takes, how much effort is involved and what costs can be expected.

The complete assessment is typically completed six weeks after the start of data collection. If required, the assessment can also be carried out over a shorter or longer period.

The effort on the customer side is relatively low. In addition to the technical preparation of a virtual server and the necessary authorizations, approx. 60 minutes should be planned for the installation. The tool then collects the data independently. Additional time must be planned for the provision of further information (e.g. regarding Microsoft licensing) and the presentation of the results. You will be accompanied and supported by our experts in all these steps.

The financial side is even more relaxed for you as a customer as part of the OLA: As a rule, AWS covers the costs. Please contact us so that we can discuss the requirements - both technical and in terms of financial support - in detail.

It is also important to know that you are under no obligation to accept or purchase the OLA. You decide which steps follow after the OLA has been completed. We are happy to support you in this and are there for you as a AWS and Microsoft partner, in cloud topics and beyond.

What about data protection during an AWS Infrastructure Optimization Assessment?

Data protection is a top priority. It is therefore particularly important for us to discuss this topic in detail during the kick-off. AWS also provides corresponding information.

As a general rule, no personal data is collected. The tools only collect infrastructure and performance data. In addition, the Migration Evaluator allows you to manually check the data before it leaves your company. You also determine which information is released for other information, e.g. licensing.

The data is then processed by us as your partner as part of the assessment. This also includes the use of an analysis tool from AWS. The data is stored there encrypted and only the analysis team has access. In addition, the conclusion of an NDA with AWS or us as a partner is part of the onboarding process of an OLA.

What are the benefits of an AWS OLA?

Regardless of whether you start your cloud migration immediately or stay with your on-premises infrastructure, the assessment provides you with directly usable results. The workload data obtained will help you either choose the right instance for the cloud environment or optimize the current server landscape.

In addition, you will receive a cost estimate with various parameters for your individual environment in the AWS cloud. This is supplemented by initial ideas for modernization and use of cloud-native solutions.

With the results of the assessment in hand, you have created an important basis for your individual path to the cloud. The OLA is fully funded by AWS, there are no costs for you.

You can also find our offer on the AWS Marketplace. You are welcome to find out more there and get in touch with us.
