Recognising and exploiting potential with the cloud migration assessment

A cloud migration assessment is an important building block in the consolidation of your IT landscape in the cloud. It is enormously helpful to take an in-depth look at the current situation from the outside in order to ensure a clean exit from data centre operations and renew your data centre infrastructure or to stabilise your IT systems and create transparency and modernise IT workstations. Even if laws and other regulatory framework conditions change or the end of support for business-critical technologies** is imminent, if software licence contracts are due for renewal and/or maintenance contracts expire, a cloud migration assessment will help you achieve greater sustainability and cost efficiency.

Four steps for an optimised cloud infrastructure

1st kick-off

In addition to getting to know your personal contacts, the first step is to introduce the assessment and define exactly which services we will provide and where we will need your support and cooperation. In addition, the scope is defined, i.e. it is determined exactly which data will be collected and analysed and which areas should be excluded from the assessment.

2. data collection

For around four to six weeks, our customised crawlers will collect data and automatically check it for completeness and integrity.

3. assessment workshop

In the workshop, the project scope is finalised after a review of the initial data and any open questions are clarified. After a cross-check of the initial data analysis, the solution scenarios are defined and the existing licence framework is clarified.

4. evaluation of the results and report

Partially automated and with a personal eye for detail, your data is analysed and classified within the discussed scope. A detailed report including proposed solutions concludes our assessment. The assessment and the parameters used are presented again in an overview, and your annual on-premises costs are also estimated here. A right-sizing of your servers and an overview of the Microsoft SQL Licensing & Optimisation details are also included, as well as an overview of the Windows and SQL servers from the assessment with versions and the end of support date. In addition, we also develop a further scenario for you, such as backup & disaster recovery, storage or file server.

A practical example: Cloud assessment reveals huge savings potential

The assessment covered almost 1000 servers including several SQL and Oracle databases. The high cost pressure from an investor and staff shortages in combination with the requirements from the automotive sector presented us with the challenge of developing fast, effective measures together with the customer. With a result totalling 58% in savings potential for a migration to a (different) hyperscaler, we were able to achieve a great result, which also surpassed previous assessments by other providers.
