Microsoft announces end of support for Exchange Server 2016 and 2019 - What are the options?
Microsoft has announced that support for Exchange Server 2016 and Exchange Server 2019 will end on October 14, 2025. After this date, there will be no more technical support services, bug fixes or security updates. To avoid potential security risks and compatibility issues, Microsoft recommends Migration to Exchange Online.
Alternatively, there is the option of an Inplace upgrade to Exchange Server Subscription Edition (SE), which will be released in the second half of 2025. For organizations currently using Exchange 2016, Microsoft recommends upgrading to Exchange Server 2019 in order to be able to perform an (inplace) upgrade to the SE version later.
Some important notes about this announcement:
- Exchange Server 2013 must be removed before installing the Subscription Edition, as coexistence with this version is not directly supported.
- Microsoft is also offering participation in the Exchange Technology Adoption Program (TAP), a beta program where companies can test new Exchange versions before the official release.
- Other Microsoft products such as Office 2016 will also soon reach the end of support.
For detailed information and instructions, Microsoft has published official articles:
- End of Support for Exchange Server 2016 and Exchange Server 2019
- Decommissioning Exchange Server 2016
It is strongly recommended to start planning the migration or upgrade as soon as possible to avoid problems at the end of support.
