Move SAP systems to an external data centre without interruption

In times of increasing digitalisation and complex data processing, outsourcing data to a reliable partner can offer decisive advantages. By using external data centres with advanced infrastructure and security measures, companies can save costs and focus on their core business. In addition, working with an experienced partner allows them to adapt more quickly to changing requirements while ensuring that sensitive data is in good hands.

Initial situation

AVENTICS has a large number of production and sales locations in Europe, Asia and the USA and has operated its own data centre for many years. The costs, capital and expertise of the employees were considerable. By transferring its SAP systems to the operational responsibility of SPIRIT/21, the company hoped to realise significant benefits.

Challenges in the uninterrupted relocation of SAP systems

The customer has ten productive and 16 non-productive SAP instances. These are predominantly ERP, but JAVA, Data Warehouse and SAP Netweaver PI are also used. The SAP systems were to be relocated to the SPIRIT/21 data centre in an uninterrupted transition. Only four months were available for the transfer - a very short period for a project of this size. The time frame was also shortened because the network connection to the SPIRIT/21 data centre could only be set up a few weeks before the transfer of operations. And: The cut-off of the customer network was to take place as late as possible.

Realisation of the project

SPIRIT/21 experts worked closely with the customer’s IT teams to develop a secure transition procedure.
The first step was to set up SWING hardware in the customer’s data centre and carry out an ‘as is’ transition in the customer’s network. The provider network connection to the SPIRIT/21 data centre was then set up and the SAP systems were transferred to the SPIRIT/21 data centre via OS/DB migration. Despite the tight schedule, the customer was able to carry out sufficient testing and acceptance tests.

Advantages of relocating the SAP systems to an external data centre

The operational responsibility for AVENTICS’ SAP systems now lies with SPIRIT/21 and the relocation was carried out within a clearly defined budget and time frame without interruption. Thanks to its in-depth expertise in IT infrastructure and SAP technology, SPIRIT/21 was able to manage and implement all necessary activities with its own resources.

The customer uses a fail-safe data centre, saves costs and can now use the freed-up expertise of its IT teams to optimise its business processes.
